Magazine Dress

Magazine and Trash bags

Date of Completion:

February 6, 2008

Concept:

This dress was created as a costume for a play I was in. In the play I was playing a very out of the box ’trashin fashion designer’. I wanted to do something apart from the normal trash bag ensemble, and use the materials to create texture of their own, which is how the idea of the fans came into play. I also wanted to have the dress be vibrant to match the charecter, which is why I focused on the placement of the colors of the magazines.

I have a fascination with the complexity and details of masquerade masks, and I wanted to try and convey the intricate designs in this piece. Once again I wanted to work with different mediums and I spent a large amount of my focus on trying to create texture and volume with the different strokes in scratching. This was also done over a period of a week.

This is a scratch board I did of an image of a mask i found that inspired me.
